The personal recollections of a Cavalryman with Custers Michigan Cavalry Brigade in the Civil War, Colonel Kidds books is an informative look at Civil War service under General George Armstrong Custer. We have added illustrations and content to this text. The illustrations that appeared in the 1908 edition and the full-text of Colonel Kidds remarks at Gettysburg during the dedication of the Michigan cavalry monuments.Kidd was a University of Michigan student when the war began but by 1862 he had recruited a company of volunteers that became Company E 6th MI Cavalry, with Captain Kidd in command.

In 1863 they became part of Custers famous Wolverine Brigade and saw their first action in the Gettysburg campaign.Kidd fought at Falling waters, Buckland Mills, The Wilderness, Todds Tavern, Yellow Tavern, Hanovertown, Haws Shop, Trevilian Station and Cedar Creek.Over the winter 1864-65, he was assigned to administrative duties in the Shenandoah Valley and DC. The book concludes with his meeting Mosby after Lees surrender, asking Mosby to take the Union-proffered parole.
