I first read this book over twenty years ago, out aloud, to my grandchildren. There were times when I had to stop and compose myself because, although this is very much a book for young children, it contains moments of genuine pathos which might well bring a temble to your voice as it did mine way back then. Its also a book about money- how some people who need it dont have any, and some people who have plenty dont need it. But the financial subtext is perhaps at times quite askew with todays sensibilities- a wretched wife-beating thug, for instance, becomes a civilised, caring gent and fine father to his children once wealthy. The squowse himself, the furtive and anony-mouse(!) agent at the centre of events, is a charming little chap with a pure and unsullied worldview, whose only wish is to be reunited with his owner.

The character is brought to life by Quentin Blakes superbly kinetic illustrations. The message I found in this book, one that is well worth sharing with any child, is a simple one: its not what you have in life, but who you have in your life that really counts.A great book to share with a youngster... particularly if youre good at doing the voices!
